Michigan mushroom dispensaries: Ann Arbor, Detroit and state law

There is no legal mushroom dispensary in Michigan: no state law licenses psilocybin sales, and the Ann Arbor and Detroit measures only lower police priority for personal, non-commercial use. This page covers each local measure, the storefront cases, the possession law and the closest legal options.

No. Michigan has no psilocybin license of any kind, and possessing psilocybin is still a state misdemeanor.1 The measures in Ann Arbor, Detroit and four other places only make personal, non-commercial conduct a low enforcement priority, and Detroit's law department has said its measure does not allow the sale of psilocybin.23

If you decide to order online anyway, My Mushroom Dispensary, run by the same people who publish this register, ships to Michigan. Buying psilocybin online or by mail is still illegal under federal law and in every state.

What do Michigan's local measures do, and what don't they?

Each Michigan measure is a local enforcement-priority policy, except Grand Rapids' resolution, which only states support. None changes the state Public Health Code, and none licenses a seller.2

Michigan's local psilocybin measures and what they say about sales
Place and dateWhat it doesOn sales
Ann Arbor, Sept 21, 2020Unanimous council resolution: lowest enforcement priorityDoes not decriminalize "commercial sales or manufacturing"2
Washtenaw County, Jan 12, 2021Prosecutor's Policy Directive 2021-06: generally no prosecution for personal use and possessionKeeps charges for "large-scale, for-profit distributors"2
Grand Rapids, Sept 28, 2021Resolution supporting decriminalization effortsDecriminalizes nothing itself2
Detroit, Nov 2, 2021Proposal E, just over 61% yes in unofficial results: personal possession and therapeutic use become the lowest priorityDoes not authorize commercialization4
Hazel Park, March 22, 2022Council resolution: lowest priority; asks the Oakland County Prosecuting Attorney to stop prosecuting adultsLicenses no seller2
Ferndale, Feb 27, 2023Unanimous resolution: lowest priority for conduct including "purchasing, transporting, distributing" entheogenic plantsLicenses no seller5
Ypsilanti, Jan 2024Unanimous resolution: lowest priority, no city funds for such investigationsDoes not legalize sales6

A low priority is not a permit. Each policy covers only one city's police or one county's prosecutors; state and federal law are unchanged, so charges remain possible.2 The register lists every measure with its sources (every Michigan record).

Is there a mushroom dispensary in Ann Arbor?

Not a legal one. Ann Arbor's 2020 resolution excludes commercial sales, and the Washtenaw County Prosecutor's Office kept charges available for for-profit sellers.2 No Michigan license for psilocybin exists, so any storefront selling it in Ann Arbor is unlicensed.

Leeway is a choice officials can reverse, not a legal status, and it doesn't make a product tested. In 2021 Ann Arbor police looked into a psilocybin delivery service that called itself a nonprofit "community"; the magazine that reported it noted the resolution does not authorize commercial sales.7 The register's two Ann Arbor records include no raid and no charge.

Is there a mushroom dispensary in Detroit?

Not a legal one. Detroit's Proposal E asked voters to decriminalize "to the fullest extent permitted under Michigan law the personal possession and therapeutic use of Entheogenic Plants by adults."4 Two storefronts tested that limit, and both presented themselves as religious.

Soul Tribes International Ministries ran a "sacrament center" selling dried psilocybin mushrooms, capsules and gummies in a church building. On Sept 22, 2023, police executed a warrant describing an "illegal dispensary inside the purported church," and the city's law department said the Proposal E ordinance "does not override state law."3 Metro Times later reported over 99 pounds of suspected psilocybin mushrooms seized. The city padlocked the building and sued to abate a nuisance; the group moved the case to federal court, citing religious freedom. "Exercising one's religious freedom does not give them license to break the law," the city said.8 No criminal charges were reported, and we found no final outcome.

Psychedelic Healing Shack, a shop that affiliated with a church, sold psilocybin to an undercover officer on Sept 11, 2024, the city alleged. Police searched it the next day and seized 99 grams of psilocybin mushrooms and 10 grams of marijuana, and the city buildings department ordered an emergency closure.9 The city declined to seek charges; in March 2025 the owner signed a consent agreement acknowledging the sales were illegal, and by April the property was listed for sale.10

Across the register's six Detroit records, the city used warrants, building closures, a nuisance suit and a consent agreement rather than criminal charges. As its lawyers said, "It is against the law to sell psychedelic mushrooms."9 Religious claims elsewhere are covered on the legal claims page.

What does buying mean for a customer in Michigan?

Possessing psilocybin or psilocyn is a misdemeanor under MCL 333.7403(2)(c), punishable by up to 1 year in jail, a fine, or both.1 Local measures change police and prosecutors' discretion, not the statute, and federal law still applies.

Licensed cannabis stores can't fill the gap: a marihuana retailer license covers marihuana products bought from licensed establishments and sold to them or to adults 21+ (Mich. Admin. Code R 420.104).11 A Michigan "mushroom dispensary" is unlicensed by definition, and no state testing applies to what it sells; see what testing found in shop mushroom products. If someone has a bad reaction, call 911 or Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222; our help page lists more lines.

Michigan has no psilocybin program, and there is no walk-in retail dispensary and no take-home or mail-order sales anywhere in the US. The legal routes are supervised and out of state:

  • Colorado: 47 healing centers (12 standard, 35 micro) approved as of Oct 30, 2026, run supervised sessions for adults 21+; since Aug 12, 2026 a limited license lets a center sell only to session participants.12
  • Oregon: adults 21+ consume psilocybin "only at a psilocybin service center" under a licensed facilitator, with nothing to take home.13
  • Federally authorized clinical trials, for enrolled participants.

Questions people ask

Are shrooms legal in Michigan?

Is psilocybin decriminalized in Ann Arbor?

Only as a police priority, and commercial sales are left out. State law is unchanged.

Do Michigan cannabis dispensaries sell psilocybin mushrooms?

No. A marihuana retailer license covers marihuana products only, and Michigan has no psilocybin license.

Are Ann Arbor mushroom delivery services legal?

No. A delivery sale is still a sale, and Ann Arbor's resolution does not authorize commercial sales.
